The rapid development of biotechnology and genetics allows humans to intervene decisively in their nature. Such "interventions" raise relentless biological, social, legal, political, religious, and economic questions that seek clear answers; the responsibility for decisions is immense, and interdisciplinary knowledge of Bioethics is necessary and imperative.
The science of Bioethics is the philosophical examination of the principles and rules that should govern the life sciences and technologies. It has developed only in the last 30 years; however, its roots lie in ancient Greek medicine and philosophy. Although the modern doctor has the final say, the saying of the ancient Greek physician-philosopher remains highly relevant: "the best doctor must also be an excellent philosopher."
