The Homo Humanus Novus series aims to be a fertile ground for reflection that highlights the complexity of the humanitarian education and its significance in shaping humanity during the postmodern era.
The educational system should not aim exclusively at providing cognitive instrumental education but should also focus on the importance of humanitarian education for the formation of the individual as conditio humana. This concerns the Homo Humanus Novus, the New Human at the peak of modernity, who equally relies on the power of the Enlightenment spirit, aesthetic knowledge, and the “undemonstrable” (Aristotle).
The combination of these elements will lead to the “education of the soul” (Kazamias). Andreas M. Kazamias engages in dialogue with ancient Greek philosophers, particularly Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle, as well as with both earlier and contemporary thinkers, notably the pioneer of critical pedagogy, Brazilian philosopher and educator Paulo Freire, American philosopher Martha Nussbaum, English poet Peter Abbs, American arts philosopher Elliot Eisner, African American philosopher Cornel West, French-Greek philosopher Cornelius Castoriadis, Greek philosopher Myrto Dragona-Munich, among others.
The transition from the ethnopolis (nation-state) to the New Cosmopolis of late modernity has brought about dramatic changes to peoples and cultures. To address the crisis of neoliberal capitalism and “democratic civic education,” Kazamias proposes a multi-level political-educational reform program aimed at reviving Democracy, innovating anew, and redefining Humanistic Education.
