Description & Specifications

“I am not writing a history, nor did I intend to publish the notes I kept during the Greek War of Independence. However, in old age, taking into my hands some foreign and Greek writers who have narrated the events of the Greek Revolution, and observing how greatly the truth of many events has been distorted, either through ignorance or imagination, and how the personalities, epochs, and events themselves have been confused, I decided to write these Memoirs. Limiting myself only to the narration of the events of which I was an eyewitness, and of my own actions, I avoided the description of events that I could know through my presence in Greece...

...I confess that in these Memoirs, I ought to omit some trivial events, but I could not silence them, as they are distortedly mentioned by other authors. ...I do not intend to be counted among the heroes of our Revolution, for my education was by no means military. Until my twenty-first year, I was engaged in preliminary studies in Cephalonia. Then moving to Western Europe, I studied law for a whole four years, and a year after my return to the Islands, while I was about to serve in the judicial branch, I was admitted at the age of twenty-five into the society of the Friendly Society. Since then, having renounced Themis, I enthusiastically embraced the arena of Ares for the purpose of liberating my homeland.

I was fortunate to see the realization of those fanciful reflections that arose in my mind through the reading of the ancient history of my ancestors.
