The family winery Gavala, one of the oldest wineries in Santorini, is located in the traditional village of Megalochori. The family's purpose is to highlight the unique characteristics of Santorini's soil. The fourth generation winemaker is Giorgos Gavala and the 5th generation is his son, Vaggelis. With respect for the local culture, they have preserved all the authentic areas of the winery, such as cellars, presses, and old entrances, while also creating a modern section with contemporary technology equipment for the production of high-quality wines.

Mavrotragano is the main red variety of the island, which was on the brink of extinction a few years ago. The vines are scattered throughout the island. It is a versatile variety with great aging potential.
