Description

Panzergrenadier is a German term for a formation of panzer grenadiers, meaning infantry units trained to fight in close cooperation with their tanks. The term was officially used in 1942, when infantry regiments were renamed as grenadier regiments and motorized units as panzer grenadier regiments.

Interestingly, during the years 1937-1942, the term Schützen Regiment was used to describe infantry regiments serving within armored units. The primary equipment of armored grenadier units consisted of armored semi-tracked vehicles, such as the Sd.Kfz.251, but inadequate production led to these infantry units often being transported by trucks.

An armored grenadier division included three infantry regiments, with two battalions in each regiment, along with numerous support units, including anti-tank, anti-aircraft, vehicle, and communication units.
