The Portal Games Underground Empire board game is a card game with engine-building mechanics, in which players expand their mines and compete against one another. Players place cards below the surface and expand the mine horizontally and vertically; each new card activates itself and the cards above it, creating chain reactions. Combinations change depending on the position of the new card, while players also advance along the progress boards.
Turns are played simultaneously. Before the game begins, three progress boards are selected at random, each adding a different strategic element. The game is set in the Settlers: Empire’s Dawn universe and can be played on its own.
