Description

The Backgammon & Chess collection is enriched with the Handmade Chess Set inspired by Greek Mythology. This medium-sized set features chess pieces in gold and silver colors, beautifully arranged on a 36x36 cm bronze chessboard, celebrating the legendary clash between the gods Poseidon and Athena.

The Legend: A glorious city was the subject of a dispute between two powerful gods: Poseidon, God of the Sea, and Athena, Goddess of Wisdom. Each god desired the city to be named in their honor. Zeus declared that each god must offer a gift to the citizens. Poseidon struck the rock of the Acropolis with his trident, bringing forth sea water, symbolizing naval supremacy. Athena, on the other hand, planted an olive tree, offering food, oil, wood, and light, symbolizing civilization. The citizens chose Athena’s gift, naming the city Athens, to Poseidon's great rage.

The Chess Pieces:

  • King: A replica of the famous statue “Poseidon of Milos” (2nd century BC), embodying power and sea supremacy.
  • Queen: Represents the glorious “Athena Promachos” (450 BC, Acropolis Museum), symbolizing wisdom and protection.
  • Bishops: Inspired by a sculpted bronze inscription from the Hellenistic period, reflecting artistic excellence.
  • Knights: Part of the marble facade of the Parthenon, carved by Phidias, symbolizing strength and heroism.
  • Rooks: A reproduction of a remarkable Attic column dedicated to the young Aristion who died in battle, representing bravery.
  • Pawns: Bronze figures of fully equipped warriors from 500 BC, embodying the spirit of ancient Greek soldiers.

Main Features:

  • Handmade chess pieces made of solid brass with gold and silver finish.
  • Bronze chessboard measuring 36x36 cm, ideal for medium spaces.
