Description

Lobelia is a perennial wild herb native to North America. Its height ranges from a dwarf 15 inches up to 1 meter. The plant's name was given in honor of the Belgian botanist Mathias de L’ Obel (1538-1616).

Lobelia is widely used in summer as ground cover. Lobelia contains the substance lobeline, which is used to stimulate the respiratory system and to treat cold symptoms by combating fever and nasal congestion.

Lobelia exhibits a paradoxical combination of relaxing and stimulating effects. It is used to relieve pain caused by spasms and has a suppressive effect on the nervous system. It is considered one of the most useful relaxing herbs.

Common uses also include lobelia poultices and rubs for sprains, bruises, insect bites, and various skin irritations.

For best results, the use of fertilizer is recommended once a month after the first month of planting. Germination instructions for lobelia are included.
