Pierre Masère follows in this study the path that leads from Foucault to Marx and attempts to read some of Marx's key concepts in light of Foucault's analyses. Thus, he presents an original introduction to Marx's theory of the capitalist mode of production and simultaneously highlights the relevance of Foucault's work on the concepts of power, resistance, and biopolitics. On this basis, he proposes the concept of the "productive subject" as a central point of convergence between the two thinkers and as a key to understanding the mechanism of capitalist exploitation.
The third and expanded edition of the book not only emphasizes the theoretical importance and ongoing relevance of Masère's problematic; it also highlights the critical nature of a research practice that, instead of treating Marx's work as a closed system of "truth," insists on its open and investigative character, organizing its dialogue with the work of thinkers like Foucault, who defined modern materialist radical thought.
It is precisely this research practice that we aim to extend by inaugurating "Deviations," the new series of Zot Lines editions, whose programmatic goal is exactly the encounter of Marxist theory with issues that may not formally fall within its domain but whose modern materialist burden can push it to renewal, expand its potency, and give new perspective to aspects that are extremely critical for its theoretical validity.
