After 7 years and 4 different Garmin models, I got tired of its increasingly elitist strategy at every level and decided to switch camps. The reasons I preferred Amazfit over the Suunto I had even earlier were two: the even brighter (on paper) display of the TR3 Pro and NFC.
Visually, I don’t absolutely love it; I find it overly "loud," even more so than the Garmin Fenix 7, to the point that it resembles watches from Temu. But we have a good amount of titanium on the bezel and buttons, the feel of the buttons is very good, it is water resistant to 100m, and the display is covered by sapphire crystal, so in essence the watch is at the highest level.
The display brightness is stated at 3000 knits, higher than the Garmin F8, on par with the Apple Watch Ultra 2, and surpassed only by the Fenix 8 Super AMOLED. There has not been a single moment under the sun when the display was not clearly visible, but what impressed me is how well the auto brightness works; in dimly lit spaces the display is very discreet.
I am a very slow, middle-aged runner, I run about 120 km a month and 2-3 marathons a year, following training plans developed by Garmin in the past and by Amazfit now, and I wear the watch most days of the month (more on that below). I say this to emphasize that I am not even a serious amateur, but I am a statistics geek and try to make the most of my equipment as much as possible. I consider Garmin the best in the field and over the years I had gotten used to doing things its way. In the end, and to avoid going on too long, everything I did with Garmin, I now do with Amazfit too, although it required a few workarounds. For example:
- Amazfit does not have an internet portal (unthinkable, but true), so you cannot view your workouts on a PC, which is important to me. I bought a subscription to Intervals.icu, and soon I will buy a Strava subscription—and I delayed that for far too long.
- Route planning on the phone screen (even on a tablet) is not convenient for me at all, and since we do not have a web-based portal, we cannot plan a route on a PC. Another app is needed; I chose the free OsmAnd. You create the route and easily transfer it to the watch.
- Garmin Pay took quite a few years to establish itself in Greece, but once that happened, it has worked flawlessly. Amazfit of course has no partnership with any Greek bank, but you can create a Curve account, add any card you want there, and pay with the watch that way. It works very easily and reliably.
All this shows me that Amazfit has not reached Garmin in the overall, seamless experience, but it is not far behind and you certainly do not end up without a feature; you just have to take one or two extra steps that, once you get used to them, do not feel like major differences.
We are not even discussing GPS accuracy; there is nothing to comment on, it is perfect. What impressed me is the accuracy in sleep tracking. It has absolutely nothing to do with Garmin; it captures naps, sleep start/end, and middle-of-the-night awakenings with tremendous accuracy, unbelievable.
Overall, all the wellness measurements recorded in the Zepp app seem more "logical" to me than Garmin’s. Here too all the measurements are consistent (as they were on Garmin), but for example, I cannot sleep 7 hours, wake up on my own and feeling rested, and Garmin gives me a sleep score of 50/100; the Amazfit’s 78/100 seems more logical to me. Otherwise, my other biometrics (HRV, VO2 max, etc.) are more or less the same as Garmin’s and, above all, consistent.
The last problem I identified, and I do not see it being fixed: I listen to music from my phone with my Bluetooth headphones connected to it. When this happens, the training-related notifications (kilometers, pace, heart rate, training phase) are not heard through the headphones, but through the watch speaker. So multipoint headphones are needed, but even those do not work reliably. So I bought the Amazfit Up, which are also open-ear, and that solved this too.
Quite often I wear "regular" watches, so the TR3 Pro stays in the box. To avoid losing the wellness measurements, I also bought the Amazfit Helio Strap, which is a simple fitness tracker that discreetly records everything the watch does.
Its battery life has nothing to do with the rated duration; in practice it lasts 11-12 days with AOD always on, always connected to the phone, and 4-5 hours of GPS workouts per week.
The TR3 Pro is not cheap at €400. But it is not comparable to the lifestyle smartwatches from Huawei, Samsung, etc.; it belongs in the sportswatch category alongside Garmin, Suunto, Coros, and Polar, and it does an excellent job. I had reservations about leaving Garmin’s firm embrace, but in the end it went much better than I expected.
**UPDATE AUGUST 2026**
The watch was given to a friend 3 months ago. The friend went into the sea and after 10 swims (surface swimming, not scuba or snorkeling) the flashlight stays on or flashes permanently, with no way to turn it off. The watch was always rinsed with tap water and the buttons were not pressed underwater. The sealing seems to be a broader problem with the T-Rex 3 Pro and perhaps the first batches. Of course the watch was sent to Germany and of course it loses 2 stars from the rating; it will get them back if everything goes smoothly and quickly with the warranty.
**UPDATE SEPTEMBER 2026**
The watch was sent on 24/08 to Germany. They replaced it and I will receive the new one on Monday, September 14, without paying any shipping costs, so I would describe Amazfit Germany’s customer service as excellent.
