The Java fern, scientifically known as Microsorum pteropus, is endemic to the tropical regions of Southeast Asia, including countries such as Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia. It primarily grows in shaded areas along riverbanks and streams, where it often attaches to stones and roots. In the wild, it develops partially or fully underwater, with its roots anchoring to hard surfaces.

The Java fern should never be planted in the aquarium substrate, as its rhizomes may rot. Instead, it is better to tie it to stones, roots, or decorative objects. It is especially suitable for small aquariums when attached to a lava rock. Due to its slow growth, the Java fern is also ideal as a mid-ground plant in larger aquariums.

Microsorum pteropus prefers low to moderate light. Very intense light can damage the leaves and lead to algae growth. A lighting duration of 6 to 8 hours per day is sufficient for healthy growth. If the light is too strong, the leaves may turn brown, so the shadier areas in the aquarium are beneficial.
