The ice bath is a recovery practice where a person immerses themselves in a bath of cold water, usually around 10-15°C. This process lasts from 5 to 15 minutes and is used to reduce inflammation, muscle pain, and tension after intense physical exercise or injuries. Athletes use it to improve their recovery and accelerate muscle rebuilding.
The mechanism behind the ice bath is based on the fact that cold causes vasoconstriction, meaning the narrowing of blood vessels, reducing blood flow and helping to remove toxins and metabolic waste. When the person leaves the bath and the body warms up again, the blood vessels expand, allowing blood flow to restore nutrients to the muscles.
Besides the benefits for muscle recovery, ice baths help reduce fatigue and improve the overall well-being of the body. It is important to note that they are not suitable for everyone and should be done under guidance or after consulting a doctor, especially for individuals with cardiovascular or circulatory problems.
