“What We Desired captures the gap between childhood fantasies and the reality of getting what we thought we wanted most. Expertly crafted and written, it is a modern myth about expectations, the pursuit of power, and how what we want to become aligns with who we really are.” - David Mariotte
Ilia Kyriacou returns with the graphic novel “What We Desired,” which will stay with you long after you turn the last page.
On the night a mysterious comet passes over Earth, a group of children encounters a supernatural being that promises to grant them a wish, but they take too long and the comet passes. 35 years later, the comet returns... and their wishes begin to come true.
“What We Desired” is an excellent exploration of contemporary social issues – gender and racial discrimination, social isolation, technology, power – filtered through a mirror of magical realism and written by the characters themselves, whose desires, flaws, and weaknesses pale in comparison to their heartbreaking humanity.
As art historian Giannis Koukoulas states: “It is proof that inclusive realism is not a one-way street and that art does not need to be drained and reduced to a militant documentary of didactic slogans to serve contemporary demands.”
The mastery of Ilia Kyriacou through this stunning graphic novel invites people to unite, to overcome their differences and diversities, and to confront a common threat.
