N-acetyl-cysteine is the acetylated form of the amino acid L-cysteine, one of the few amino acids that contains sulfur (sulfhydryl group). As such, it is characterized by a strong but completely natural characteristic odor.

The sulfur group of cysteine is very reactive and participates in various enzymatic reactions, which is reflected in the multiple biological functions of cysteine. The most important biological function of cysteine is the increase of intracellular glutathione levels.
