Taurine is one of the most well-known sulfur amino acids and can be synthesized in the body from Cysteine with the synergistic action of Vitamin B6. It plays an important role in the normal functioning of the brain, heart, gallbladder, eyes, and vascular system.
Taurine is involved in many biological functions, acting as a neurotransmitter in the brain, as a stabilizer of cell membranes, and as a mediator in the transport of ions such as sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium. Taurine, after GABA, is the second-in-line inhibitory neurotransmitter of the brain. The amino acids alanine, glutamic acid, and pantothenic acid inhibit the metabolism of taurine, while Vitamins A and B6, zinc, and manganese contribute to the synthesis of taurine. The gallbladder uses taurine for the formation of taurocholic acid, one of the two bile acids required for the breakdown of fat in the small intestine. Taurine also participates in the excretion of cholesterol and bilirubin in the bile.
- High alcohol consumption increases taurine losses.
- Low levels of taurine are found in vegetarians and individuals following a diet low in dairy and meat products.
- It is a key ingredient in popular energy drinks.
