About the book

Summa de Arithmetica, Geometria, Proportioni et Proportionalita, by Luca Pacioli (Venice, 1494).

Luca Pacioli was a teacher, traveler, scholar, and friend of distinguished figures such as Leonardo da Vinci and Piero della Francesca. He was also the author of the most important mathematics textbook of the Renaissance, Summa de Arithmetica. Engaging with the world of accounting, bookkeeping, and financial arithmetic, his treatise not only printed these ideas but elevated the concerns of the entrepreneur and the accountant to the intellectual levels of other humanities. It is the first published description of double-entry bookkeeping (the Venetian commercial practice that still underpins global trade), contains the first printed appearance of the symbols for addition and subtraction, and many of Fibonacci's ideas (the 13th-century mathematician who introduced Indo-Arabic numerals to Europe).
