Book: Erbario, by an unknown author (Veneto, 15th century).
This stunning botanical manuscript from northern Italy contains various types of illustration, evidence of additions made to the original text throughout the generations. It began its life in the late 15th century as a collection of around seventy exquisite paintings of plants with human forms and other fantastical elements, following medieval conventions. Later, the bound manuscript is interwoven with a set of more naturalistic images, perhaps painted directly from samples or at least very good drawings.
About a quarter of the illustrations contain notes on the medicinal properties and preparations of the plants, mostly in Italian and occasionally in Latin or a mix of both languages. This suggests that the text was primarily written in Veneto.
