The Belfast is a museum ship, a former light cruiser of the Royal Navy, permanently moored in London on the River Thames and managed by the Imperial War Museum. The construction of Belfast, which was named after the capital of Northern Ireland and is one of the ten Town-class cruisers, began in December 1936. It was launched on St. Patrick's Day, March 17, 1938. It joined the fleet shortly before the outbreak of World War II in August 1939, initially participating in the naval blockade of Germany.

In November 1939, the Belfast struck a German mine and spent more than two years undergoing extensive repairs. It returned to action in November 1942 with improved armament, radar equipment, and armor, and was the largest and possibly the most powerful cruiser of the Royal Navy at that time. The Belfast took part in Arctic convoy escort missions to the Soviet Union in 1943 and in December 1943 played a significant role in the Battle of North Cape, contributing to the destruction.
