The modern Ukrainian Armed Forces (uk. ZSU) were established in December 1991 based on the land units that remained on the territory of the former Ukrainian Soviet Republic, as well as bases or warehouses of military suppliers and ammunition. Since then, the number of land forces has been systematically reduced until 2014, the beginning of the Russian aggression in Donbas. In 2016, the land armed forces numbered about 169,000 soldiers in active service.

Today, in the face of the Russian threat, the emphasis is placed on upgrading the army as professionally as possible, providing units with the latest available equipment and improving the quality of training. Notably, changes in this field have been occurring since 2006, with significant influence from the joint exercises of Ukrainian units with NATO forces.
