The origins of the Tornado project date back to 1968, with the establishment of the tri-national consortium PANAVIA for the implementation of the MRCA (Multi-Role Combat Aircraft) project. On September 14, 1974, the first prototype flight took place, starting the construction of the first 640 ordered aircraft. The Tornado fleets now constitute the most important part of the air force of three European NATO countries.
