The Jersey is a British breed of small dairy cattle from Jersey, in the British Channel Islands. It is one of the three Channel Island cattle breeds, the others being the Alderney and the Guernsey.
The milk is rich in butterfat and has a characteristic yellowish tint.
The breed was developed on the British Channel Island of Jersey, originating from cattle brought over from Normandy and first recorded around 1700. The breed was isolated from external influence for more than 200 years, from 1789 to 2008.
Before 1789, cows were given as dowries for marriages between Jersey and Guernsey. In 1789, imports of foreign cattle into Jersey were prohibited by law to preserve the purity of the breed.
