First series of hard boxes celebrating the literary success of Christopher Tolkien, with double-sided covers. Series 1 includes special editions of The Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales which reproduce the text of the first edition, along with the two volumes of The Book of Lost Tales.
The Silmarillion is a tale of the Ancient Days, the First Age of Tolkien's world. It is the ancient drama to which the characters of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings refer, and some of whom, such as Elrond and Galadriel, participated in its events. The stories of The Silmarillion take place in an era when Morgoth, the first Dark Lord, dwelled in Middle-earth, and the High Elves fought against him to reclaim the Silmarils, the precious stones that contain the pure light of Valinor.
Unfinished Tales is a collection of narratives spanning time from the Ancient Days of Middle-earth and the rise of Númenor in the Second Age to the culmination of the War of the Ring and provides readers of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings with a comprehensive collection of background and new stories from the most renowned popular author of the 20th century.
The Book of Lost Tales stands at the beginning of the conception of Middle-earth and Valinor, as the Tales were the earliest form of the myths and legends that came to be called The Silmarillion. Embedded in English tradition and collection, they are set within a narrative framework of a great journey westward over the Ocean by a mariner named Eriol to the solitary isle where the Elves dwelt; from them, he learned their true story, the Lost Tales of Elves.
In the two volumes of the Tales are the earliest accounts of Gods and Elves, Dwarves, Balrogs, and Orcs; of the Silmarils and the Two Trees of Valinor; of the geography and cosmology of Tolkien's invented world. Published together for the first time, these four books encompass the beginning of Christopher Tolkien's forty-year career dedicated to presenting his father J.R.R. Tolkien's writings on Middle-earth, a unique accomplishment celebrating the greatest invented world in all fantasy literature.
