Description

Description

A compact F2.8 zoom ready to go anywhere

With a range of 24-50 mm that is ideal for everyday shots, this versatile zoom offers a large F2.8 aperture and beautiful performance at all focal lengths in an ultra-compact, lightweight design. With the groundbreaking FE 24-50mm F2.8 G lens, you get refined large-aperture imaging performance for both photos and movies.

Impressive sharpness at any focal length

The advanced optical design, which includes four aspherical elements and two ED (extra-low dispersion) elements, provides high resolution throughout the 24-50 mm zoom range. Reflections, ghosting, and chromatic aberrations are effectively minimized for clear, detailed performance.

The deep background defocus (bokeh) makes the subject stand out

The large aperture that remains constant at F2.8 throughout the zoom range, the modern optical design, and the 11-blade circular aperture unit work harmoniously to deliver smooth and deep background defocus (bokeh), which is a hallmark of Sony's G lens series. Exceptional background defocus (bokeh) that brings subjects to the forefront.

Impressive Close-Up Performance

Thorough optical optimization has achieved high close-up performance at all focal lengths. The maximum magnification is 0.3x (AF)/0.33x (MF) with a minimum focusing distance of 0.19 m (0.63 ft) (AF)/0.18 m (0.59 ft) (MF) at the wide end of the range for impressive close-up performance, which, combined with the compact size, makes this lens ideal for tabletop photography.

Autofocus that maximizes the body's dynamics

Two optimized linear mechanisms and a precision control system ensure focus on every subject with remarkable speed and accuracy. The tracking performance is excellent and easily keeps up with Sony's advanced a9 III body model at up to 120 fps. Precise and silent focusing is achieved smoothly and maintained even when shooting high frame rate movies at 4K 120p or FHD 240p.

A compact F2.8 zoom ready to go anywhere

Although it features a high-performance optical design with four aspherical elements and a large F2.8 aperture, this lens has a diameter of only 74.8 mm (3 inches) and a length of 92.3 mm (3-3/4 inches). The use of engineering plastics enhances durability while reducing the weight to just 440 grams (15.6 oz.) for versatile portability and minimal stress during long shooting periods.

The F2.8 in a portable zoom is perfect for movies

The precise, silent autofocus and F2.8 aperture in a compact, lightweight zoom are an advantage for filming. The minimal shift in the center of gravity makes the lens ideal for mounting on a gimbal or drone. Along with the built-in Active Mode stabilization, it provides steady wide-angle handheld shots while walking. Focus breathing compensation and metadata recording are supported.

Complete Handling

In addition to the three control rings, the FE 24-50mm F2.8 G lens features a customizable focus hold button and an AF/MF switch. The linear response MF ensures immediate, easy manual focus control. The internal focusing facilitates the use of 67 mm rotating filters, such as the variable ND types often used when shooting films.

Three control rings in a compact lens

For immediate, easy control and creativity when taking photos and movies, this lens features a set of three rings: focus, zoom, and aperture. The click positions of the aperture ring can be enabled or disabled to match the shooting conditions.

Reliability in Tough Conditions

Durability against dust and moisture maximizes reliability in tough outdoor conditions, while the front element features a fluorine coating.

Environmentally Friendly

Sony's "Road to Zero" project aims for zero environmental footprint by 2050. The environmental footprint of this product has been minimized from development through the supply chain, production, and packaging. We are also transitioning to non-plastic packaging materials. Plant-based fabrics are used for product bags.

I will start with the only negative, which is the price. Yes, it is expensive for what it is, however, I still don't think I can take off a star from the rating for this reason. In any case, there are cashback offers or used options to somewhat reduce its price.

Essentially, the lens is excellent. If someone works in this focal range and doesn't need the 50mm-70mm of the classic mid-zoom, then it's perfect.

    - Low weight/volume for full frame f/2.8
    - Quality construction with nice handling
    - Optically very good, there is distortion at the wide focal lengths but once corrected, nothing is visible at the edges and it fixes that slight softness that may appear initially

A positive, which is subjective, is that it is 'closed' at 50mm and extends as it goes towards 24mm. For many, this might be negative and annoying during use. If someone mainly uses 35mm - 50mm, they will enjoy it.

In the end, it's great for street, great for travel, great for video as a compact kit, for nature the range might be more limiting depending on what someone is used to. I have no opinion on professional mystery conditions as I am an amateur who has no contact with that field.
