Havana 2016. Historical events are shaking life in Cuba: the anticipated visit of Obama and the normalization of relations with the USA, a concert by the Rolling Stones, a fashion show by the Chanel house. Thus, when the mutilated body of a former government official is discovered, the police lack the resources to deal with the case and are forced to turn to Mario Conde for a small amount of help. He remembers that the deceased, a despotic, brutal, and dark man, had been a censor and extortionist of many artists for several years.
After a few days, as another body is found murdered under similar circumstances, all alarms begin to ring. Simultaneously, another story emerges from the early years of the last century, when Havana was the "Nice of the Caribbean" and the threat of Halley's comet overshadowed its frenzied rhythms. From those turbulent and transitional years also arises the strange figure of someone who became known as the greatest pimp of the time. Past and present intersect in ways that no one can imagine.
"Leonardo Padura has written his best book featuring Mario Conde. The Honest People is the most complete, the most complex, and the most thrilling in this series of detective novels." El País
"The Cuban author has returned to affirm and strengthen his position as a great novelist, offering readers another masterful narrative." El Periódico
"A literary celebration full of complex characters bursting with life." ABC Cultural
"Leonardo Padura at a wonderful moment." La Razón
