At the outbreak of the wars with revolutionary France (1792-1799), the Prussian army maintained the reputation of its great successes during the Seven Years' War (1756-1763). The memories of victories such as the Battle of Rossbach (1757) and Lutynia (1757) remained alive. The Prussian army was widely considered perhaps the best in Europe.

From the 1770s, however, a process of erosion and ossification began. Its combat value became increasingly questionable, but it still had successes in campaigns against France in 1792-1795. However, during the campaign of 1806, it suffered a catastrophic defeat in the battles of Jena and Auerstedt.

The reforms that followed affected the Prussian infantry, which included the so-called line infantry, consisting of guards and grenadiers. In 1806, it had 147 battalions and in March 1813 formed 12 line infantry regiments. From 1813 to 1815, this number increased to 32 regiments through the selection of reserve battalions.

Before the 1806 campaign, the line infantry regiment comprised 2 battalions, each with 805 to 830 soldiers. After 1808, the structure changed with the creation of one fusilier battalion and two guard battalions, each battalion having 4 companies.

The shooting equipment of the Prussian line infantry included various types of flintlock rifles. The training was generally good for the regiments formed before 1813 and average for those formed in 1813-1815, with morale and will to fight often being high.
