The purpose of the oilcloth is to gently absorb the oil and the myrrh from your child's body. That’s why they must be made of high-quality cotton.

Don't forget that an oilcloth set consists of the oilcloth, the towel, the small towel, as well as the undergarments that come into direct contact with your child.

The cleaning of the oilcloths after the ceremony is in itself a small ritual, as according to tradition, the godmother along with the mother must rinse it 3 times in the sea or river, in running water. The purpose is not to make them spotlessly clean but to retain the scent of myrrh & oil from the ceremony.

You should know that the holy myrrh used in baptism is prepared once every ten years at the Phanar by the Patriarch.

Advice for storing oilcloths: wrap in clothing storage paper along with white Marseille soap. This way, the oilcloths will smell of soap and myrrh.
