The oilcloth is meant to gently absorb the oil and myrrh from your child's body. That’s why they are made from high-quality cotton. A set of oilcloths consists of the oilcloth, the towel, the small towel, as well as the underwear that comes in direct contact with your child.

Cleaning the oilcloths after the ceremony is a small ritual, as traditionally the godmother along with the mother must rinse it 3 times in the sea or river, in running water. The goal is not to make them spotlessly clean but to preserve the scent of myrrh & oil from the ceremony.

You should know that the holy myrrh used in baptism is prepared once every ten years at the Phanar by the Patriarch.

Tip for storing the oilcloths: "wrap in garment storage paper along with white Marseille soap. This way the oilcloths will smell of soap and myrrh".
