Description & Specifications

Budapest has always been an important place. In its almost central position in Europe, it is at the crossroads of geographical areas and cultures, at the intersection of ancient trade routes. The mountains that slope into gentle hills merge with a great river, the Danube, and the areas of Buda and Pest emerged from its two sides.

Throughout history, the center of gravity in Budapest and among Hungarians has shifted between this separate East and West - culturally, politically, emotionally. Conquerors came and went, empires conquered, occupied for centuries or decades and left behind some traces: the ruins of a Roman bath with wonderfully preserved mosaics are situated next to a Soviet-style five-year plan apartment block. The city bears the scars of the rise and fall of multiple empires, two world wars, fascism, Nazi German occupation, and Soviet communism.

It has been home to some of the greatest writers, artists, and musicians in the world. Hungary is a country of extremes, a small country that has often surpassed its limitations in history. On many occasions, events that started in Budapest have proven to be of global significance. This is the story of this tumultuous, often divided, but always fascinating city.
