RS-485 is a standard that allows the installation of cost-effective local networks and multipoint connections. It offers data transmission speeds of 35 Mbit/s for distances up to 10 meters and 100 kbit/s up to 1200 meters. It uses a balanced differential line over a twisted-pair cable, allowing transmission over relatively long distances up to 1200 meters. The rule is that the speed in bit/s multiplied by the length in meters should not exceed 108.
