Hyssop (Hyssopus Officinalis) is an herb known since ancient times. Hippocrates used it for pleurisy, and Dioscorides recommended it for asthma and cataracts in combination with wormwood.
Hyssop contains:
- up to 2% volatile oil (mainly pinocamphone)
- flavonoids
- a glycoside (hyssopine)
- diosmin
- oleanoic acid
- tannin up to 8%
It acts as an antispasmodic, expectorant, diaphoretic, sedative, and emmenagogue. We use it for:
- cough
- bronchitis
- chronic rhinitis
Its diaphoretic properties make it beneficial for the common cold. It may also serve as a neurotonic in cases of anxiety, hysteria, and mild epilepsy. To prepare the infusion, pour one cup of boiling water over 1-2 teaspoons of dried herb and let it steep for 10-15 minutes. The infusion can be taken up to three times a day.
Herbs are and should be treated as medicines. It is always advisable to consult your doctor before taking them.
