The speech tracheostomy tube is used in cases where the vocal cords are intact, to divert exhalation towards the oral cavity and achieve speech. The tracheostomy tube can be plastic or silver, with or without a balloon (cuff).

Tracheostomy is the surgical opening of the trachea and the placement of a special tube within it, aiming to ventilate the patient by bypassing the upper respiratory tract. It is the artificial opening at the anterior wall of the trachea below the cricoid cartilage, between the 2-3 cartilage. The tracheostomy tube is the most essential tool in the daily life of patients with a tracheostomy. Depending on the case, the use of a different type of tracheostomy tube is recommended. The stay of the tube can be temporary or permanent.

Balloon or cuff: It is not present in all tracheostomies. When inflated, it serves to keep the tube in place and prevent air from escaping to the oropharynx. It is connected via a thin tube to an external pilot balloon which indicates whether the internal balloon is inflated. Generally, patients with a tracheostomy in the ward should have the balloon deflated. The balloon is inflated or deflated only upon the doctor's instruction.
