The Spartan command is usually the most elite group of warriors among the forces, responsible for strengthening their men and holding the line at all costs. Spartans are perhaps the most famous warriors in history, and rightly so! Spartan Hoplites were respected and feared throughout Greece, with the belief that no land force could stand against them. Laconia, with Sparta as its capital, offered staunch resistance to the imperial ambitions of the Athenians. Those who could not fight as hoplites served as lightly armed infantry, usually with a spear, stones, or a sling. The Greeks often used lead sling bullets, carried in small bags. These lead bullets sometimes had messages engraved on them like "Take this!"
