First-rate ships are the ultimate vessels in Black Seas. These ships offer powerful attacks and withstand fierce assaults. Any enemy that finds itself alongside a first-rate is unlikely to survive to tell the tale. First-rates also have the highest quantity and variety of customization and upgrade options in the game.

Spanish first-rates have a special character when national special rules are used in the game. Many Spanish ships were incredibly heavily armed, and so they can acquire the "Over Gunned" upgrade at no additional cost. This extra capability comes with the condition that these valuable ships are difficult to navigate. They must therefore pass a skill test when trying to sail at faster speed. Veteran crews are also not allowed to be selected on these "Over Gunned" ships.
