It was founded in 1911 in Italy and initially produced clothing for the residents of the Italian Alps, mainly underwear. In the 1970s, it transitioned to sports apparel, especially after collaborating with tennis player Björn Borg. Since 1991, Fila has focused on footwear in America. It received support from famous athletes, which helped make FILA the fastest-growing footwear brand in America by 1995.

In 2003, FILA was sold to “Cerberus Capital Management,” and in 2007 the brand and its international subsidiaries were acquired by “FILA Korea.” In 2019, the South Korean boy band “BTS” became the global ambassador for Fila, boosting the brand's sales worldwide.
