Italeri Leonardo Da Vinci - Breech-Loading Cannon with Mantlet [3107]
Among the various war machines designed by Leonardo are breech-loading cannons. The drawings on folio 32r of the Codex Atlanticus reveal ingenious solutions for their time and show two different versions of these weapons.
- Tripod-mounted design with wooden pins in a perforated ring, allowing the firing height to be adjusted.
- Model based on the second design: a breech-loading cannon with a rotating barrel and a protective mantlet.
- Initially designed to fire stones, they were later used to launch projectiles and arrows after the invention of gunpowder.
Leonardo’s folio also features studies of projectiles and gunpowder recipes.
