The Brunello di Montalcino is a red Italian wine produced in the vineyards around the town of Montalcino, which is located about 80 kilometers south of Florence in the Tuscany wine region.

Brunello is the name given locally to a single grape variety grown in Montalcino. In 1879, the Viticultural Commission of the Province of Siena concluded that Sangiovese and Brunello were the same grape variety. In Montalcino, the name Brunello evolved into the designation of the wine produced with 100% Sangiovese.

In 1980, Brunello di Montalcino received the first designation Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG) and today is one of the most well-known and expensive wines in Italy.
