Raised in ancient times as weapons in the war for Middle-earth, the Great Dragons were immense, serpent-like creatures, clad in scaly hides and endowed with sharp intellect. Within them combined the cunning of thinking beings and the ferocity of wild beasts. They had long horns, sharp claws, and malicious mouths filled with countless teeth. The sharp, slitted eyes of the Dragons were always vigilant, their sense of smell acute, and their long bodies grew to a size unmatched by any other creature that walked the earth.

Some were winged, capable of soaring through the skies and covering great distances like the wind. Others burned with fiery rage from within, unleashing fire and death from their gaping jaws at will. And in some such abilities combined with terrifying effect...

In the later years of the Third Age, only a few remained, mostly isolated in the scorched lands of the Desolate Wastes, far to the north and trapped between the mountainous arms of the Grey Mountains. Great was their hunger and their desire for violence burned always in their bellies. When the rumor of the wealth of Erebor reached their ears, the greatest of the Fire Dragons still living in Middle-earth flew south. Smaug was his name; a massive gold and red beast, whose ruthless nature was matched only by his pride.

His arrival was like a hurricane of fire. The cities of Dale and Erebor quickly fell before his unstoppable advance, countless dwarves and men consumed in his flames or shattered by tooth and claw. Once the inhabitants realized what destruction was befalling them, they had already perished or been displaced. Then the Great Dragon, who called himself the Magnificent, seized the wealth of the Lonely Mountain and settled, coiled around his treasure. Since then, Erebor became a place of terror, and the lands around it grew barren, parched, and plundered; the Desolation of Smaug.
