Patchouli, scientific name Pogostemon cablin, is a shrub belonging to the mint family, native to the tropical regions of Asia. It is used in Japan and Malaysia as an antidote for bites from venomous snakes, while Chinese medicine recommends it for the treatment of headaches, colds, nausea, diarrhea, and abdominal pain.

Patchouli essential oil is extracted through steam distillation of the dried leaves of the plant and has a dark orange color, with a sweet, spicy, and exotic aroma. It is recommended as a venotonic for edema, varicose veins, and heavy legs, while it is believed to help reduce sweating and hot flashes during menopause.
