In the context of the so-called Dispute between the Schools of Theology and Philosophy, which erupted in the 18th century, Philosophy was regarded by the supporters of Theology as a handmaid of Theology – however, Kant noted in defense of Philosophy's role, not to hold the dress of Theology while following it, but to illuminate its path by going ahead with a candle in hand.
Philosophy could, in this sense, be said to be the handmaid of every science. The role of philosophy is to broaden the horizon of our minds, to open new paths, and, if along our journey we encounter insurmountable difficulties, to urgently call us back to the beginning of the path, to traverse it again while showing us how not to make the mistakes that led us into dead ends.
