They take in air from below and release it from above, resulting in air circulation and quick heating of the space. With a 2000-watt unit, I have 18° to 20° degrees in 60 sq.m. and outside temperatures down to 0°. Of course, that's the limit... if the outside temperature drops further, you add a second unit. Now, of course, the technology has introduced electronic thermostats and WiFi as well.
