Modern Greek philosophy has its origins in the mid-15th century, starting with the Fall of Constantinople and the dissolution of the Byzantine Empire. This event led many intellectuals of the time, as well as those wishing to study the Greek language and philosophy, to educational centers in Western Europe, mainly in Venice and Florence, thus bringing Greek scholars into contact with the Renaissance movement and Western European scholars with ancient Greek language and philosophy.
From this interaction emerged important studies that contributed to the dissemination of the views of ancient Greek philosophers, as well as establishing a new basis for vital issues such as the language question, the relationship between philosophy and theology, and the definition of modern Greek identity.
