The 7805 is a widely used linear voltage regulator. This regulator is ideal for converting a battery or wall adapter from 7-35V into a clean 5.0V output with a regulation accuracy of 2%. It is the TO-220 version, with a maximum current capability of 1.5A and includes integrated current limiting and over-temperature protection, making it durable and reliable.
This regulator has a voltage drop of ~2V, which means it requires at least 7V to deliver a clean 5V output. The quiescent current is 6mA. It can provide up to 1.5A as long as there is proper cooling. The higher the input voltage and output current, the more heat will be generated.
The regulator does not require capacitors for stability, but it is recommended to use at least 10uF electrolytic capacitors on both its input and output sides.
