“Who is it?”

“It's called Hercule Poirot.”

“I've heard of him. I thought he was dead.”

“He is not dead. But I have a feeling he is dying of boredom. And that is worse.”

The typist Sheila Webb had clear instructions: she was to be at 19 Wilbraham Crescent at three o'clock. But there awaited her a macabre surprise: the body of a man on the living room floor.

Although Sheila is shocked by the discovery of the dead man, she recalls hearing the cuckoo of the clock strike three times. The door opened and Sila Webb entered, slightly out of breath. "The Blonde Cat asked for you," Edna said. Sila Webb made a grimace. "Oh, this bad luck of mine… the only day I’m late!" She smoothed her hair, took a pen and notebook, and knocked on the director’s door. Kathryn Martindale lifted her eyes from her papers. In her early forties, she exuded dynamism and professional competence. Her reddish-blonde hair and voluminous styled hairdo made her look like a cat, hence the nickname Blonde Cat they had given her. "You’re late, Miss Webb." "Sorry, Miss Martindale. The bus got stuck in traffic." "There’s always traffic at this hour. Make sure to account for it." She consulted her notebook. "A Miss Pibmars called. She wants a stenographer at three. She specifically asked for you. Have you worked for her before?" "I don’t recall anything like that, Miss Martindale. Not recently, at least." "The address is 19 Wilbraham Crescent." She paused questioningly, but Sila Webb shook her head in the negative.
