The Shadow Theater is accustomed to highlighting the most important moments of modern Greek history. Karagiozis and his company could not be absent from the glorious Battle of the Fortresses, where for the first time in the history of World War II there was strong resistance against the Germans.
Through carefully crafted texts and images, combining historical accuracy with the humor of the Shadow Theater, the main events that took place at the Roupel Fortress in early April 1941 are described. Historical documents are presented, the way of life of the defenders of the Roupel Fortress is described, and the structure and functionality of its tunnels in 1941 are detailed.
The highlight scene, which shows the bravery of the defenders of the Fortresses, is the refusal to surrender Roupel when it was requested by the Germans. In the final scene, the Germans pay tribute to the Greek soldiers who leave Roupel with their heads held high, as they were never defeated.
Young readers become participants in the epic Battle of the Fortresses and learn history in a particularly entertaining way. They have the opportunity to experience this great event through the eyes of (then) 8-year-old Minas Tatsios, who wrote this work and was awarded in 2017 in the student competition on the theme "The Battle of the Fortresses" organized by the Friends of Ochiro Istibe Association with the approval of the Ministry of Education.
