In Origins: First Builders, you are a lord, guiding a population of free people, influencing the construction of buildings and monuments, advancing in the three powerful temples of the zodiac, and participating in an arms race — all in an effort to leave the greatest mark in the ancient history of humanity.
You start the game with a city consisting of only two building tiles: the Market tile and the Palace tile. As the game progresses, your city will grow both in size and power as you add new building tiles, each of which has a special ability that activates when first added to a city and when an area is closed. Your position on the military track indicates the rewards you receive when you attack and your chances of becoming the first player.
Origins: First Builders is played over multiple rounds, with a round ending only after every player has passed. If an end-game condition has not yet been triggered, the game continues with a new round. On your turn, you perform one of the following actions:
- Visit a meeting location with your workers to gain resources and additional citizen or speaker dice, advance on the zodiac temple tracks (and possibly earn zodiac cards), and advance and attack on the military track.
- Close a district, earning victory points (VP) and possibly gold for matching the building pattern of a district card, additional bonuses based on the buildings you activate, and extra VP at the end of the game based on the value of the citizen you use to close the district.
- Build a new tower level to increase your end-game score based on the heights of the towers and the corresponding colored dice you use to close your districts.
- Increase your population.
- Pass.
