Giovanni Battimo is one of the most important representatives of postmodernism. He believes that modernity, with its faith in "grand narratives," has come to an end. He refers to the "end of history," meaning that there is no longer a single myth that guides human action towards a purpose.
He himself believes that the transition from modernity to postmodernity is shaped as a passage from a "strong" thought to a "weak" thought. In strong or metaphysical thought, the subject thinks and speaks in the name of truth, unity, or totality. On the contrary, weak thought is presented as a form of nihilism, as a practical disbelief. This nihilism is a different kind of skepticism; it both despises and attracts, undermines and conquers, it lacks faith but it does not make it disappear. Therefore, he believes that nihilism does not appear as an adversary, but as an opportunity. In reality, the man of the 20th century is not accustomed to living without being driven to anxiety, in a situation where there are no guarantees and certainties. The issue for Battimo is not that we are nihilists, but rather that we are not nihilistic enough.
