Big Ben is the nickname for the great bell of the clock at the north end of the Palace of Westminster in London, although today the name also refers to the clock and the clock tower. The bell weighs nearly 14 tons and each clock face has a diameter of 23 feet. It became fully operational on September 7, 1859, and is today one of the most important symbols of London with a height of 316 feet. The clock requires winding three times a week and old coins are periodically added or removed from the pendulum clock to maintain its accuracy.
