The Metaphysics of Love is a text in which Schopenhauer provides clarifications regarding excerpts from the fourth book of his main work, The World as Will and Representation.
The interesting aspect of this text about love is that Schopenhauer, contradicting the spirit of his time, deconstructs any inclination towards romantic daydreaming, and it surely disappointed many of his readers, who would discover upon reading that their passionate loves were nothing more than the playthings of irrational natural forces.
By emphasizing the biological components of the erotic phenomenon, Schopenhauer may be somewhat ahead of his time with this work.
We cannot say the same for the second text, On Women, which does not withstand any criticism, as it merely presents, in the form of a theory, the problematic of his relationship with women, and certainly with his mother.
