  • Variety

    Cabernet Franc

    Often used in blends with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, but also produces excellent single-varietal wines. It has a lighter body than Cabernet Sauvignon, with aromas of red fruits (raspberry, cherry), characteristic vegetal notes (pepper, tomato leaves), and sometimes graphite.

    Cabernet Sauvignon

    It produces wines with intense tannins, full body, and characteristic aromas of black fruits (blackcurrant, black cherry), often with notes of cedar, mint, or tobacco. They have excellent aging potential.

    Merlot

    It gives wines with soft tannins, medium acidity, and aromas of red fruits (cherry, plum), often with notes of herbs or chocolate. They are rounder and softer on the palate compared to Cabernet Sauvignon.

    Petit Verdot

    It offers intense color, strong tannins, and aromas of black fruits, violet, and spices, usually in blends.

The history of Ridge Vineyards begins in 1885, when Osea Perrone, a doctor who became a prominent member of San Francisco's Italian community, purchased 180 acres near the top of Monte Bello Ridge. In 1962, Ridge made its first Monte Bello. Since then, Ridge has pioneered single-vineyard winemaking, searching California for those rare and exceptional vineyards where the climate, soil, and variety ideally match.

Ridge's approach to winemaking is called "pre-industrial." They believe that for anyone attempting to make good wine, modern additives and industrial processing limit the true quality. Their philosophy derives from the techniques used in the best wineries of 19th-century California and the Bordeaux châteaux.

The 2016 Monte Bello is a blend of:

  • 72% Cabernet Sauvignon
  • 12% Merlot
  • 10% Petit Verdot
  • 6% Cabernet Franc

Fermentation with native yeasts. Full malolactic fermentation with its natural bacteria. Aged in new French oak and American oak barrels for 18 months.
