It definitely needs more than just the chalk paint color you will use to seal it and prevent it from peeling. I painted many furniture pieces and a wardrobe with chalk paint, and then applied this varnish for sealing and durability. It's worth it!

After several years, we wanted to change the color (beige) in our dining room, chairs, table, and buffet. We achieved perfect results using chalk paint and a layer of varnish for protection. After 4 years, there is no sign of wear on the color. The most important thing for us was that we didn't have to sand the furniture!
